Solve Rubik’s Cube – feel good about yourself!

Rubik's Cube dressIn 1974 a Hungarian by the name of Erno Rubik invented what he called the Magic Cube (later known as Rubik’s Cube), and it has since sold in literally hundreds of millions, soon becoming what is widely regarded as the world’s best-selling toy. The Cube became available internationally in 1980 and promptly started scrambling people’s brains all over the world, with its millions of potential moves and configurations.

I remember how easy it was to get one face of the cube completed, and how satisfying it was to get two completed … and how weirdly frustrating it was to get hellishly close to the third side being completed, and then suddenly realising that you’ve just messed up one of the previously completed sides. Grrrr… At least I think it was two sides that could be completed easily … well it was quite a long time ago, and it was the type of puzzle that you actually wanted to forget in the end!

Rubik's Cube outfitAnytime you think life’s pretty complicated, just think back to how puzzling Rubik’s Cube was, way back. We all played around with it, and mostly to not very much effect at all, but it seems there is a way to solve it if you know how to go about it (well, I always suspected there was, but I could never quite crack it, to be honest). And if you were like most that tried it, you probably just gave up after a while. It really was very frustrating!

And if you sometimes wonder if it’s possible to ever achieve anything (e.g., if you’re trying your damnedest but just seem to be getting nowhere), then take heart … you can do something amazing if you stick at it and go about it in just the right way. Just take a look at what these kids are doing. They’re not just solving Rubik’s Cube, they’re smashing it! I was tempted to do that myself once or twice actually, in the purely physical sense …

Blindfolded! Almost unbelievable! Then this kid, just to make a point, does it one-handed … pfffkids, eh?!

And if you want to see what’s possible, I mean if you’re really, really determined … check this out; this guy is solving 50 Rubik’s Cubes … blindfold! Now that’s just ridiculous … er, I mean, astonishing!

Solving Rubik’s Cube

So, if you want to impress your friends, you can now learn the proper way to solve the cube, thanks to the magic of the modern interweb. Instructions and instructional videos are available here and there, such as this one, which seems to be very well put together (much like the Cube).

If you take it easy and stick to the explanation, you’ll be able to solve the puzzle as well as anyone can. And if you want to be really impressive, it’s just a matter of practice to build up your speed. You might never make it to be a speed champion, but just being able to do it will be truly amazing, in my book anyway!

And you know that feeling you get when you manage to solve the Cube (well, you will do, if you follow the guidelines)? Well, carry that feeling over to the rest of your life, and boost your confidence and your resolve by remembering that you managed the seemingly impossible … you managed to solve the Cube. And if you can do that, you can do anything!
